What Is TFP?
Transference Focused Psychotherapy Australia
Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is a specialised psychoanalytic therapy that is designed to help individuals complex personality patterns / personality disorders. At its core, TFP seeks to uncover and address unconscious dynamics that shape how you relate to yourself and others. By exploring the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that emerge in the therapeutic relationship (known as transference), this therapy provides a unique opportunity to understand and work through patterns that may feel stuck or overwhelming in your daily life. This approach is particularly effective for individuals struggling with an unstable sense of self, intense relationships, interpersonal conflicts, impulsive behaviour or chronic feelings of emptiness.
A Collaborative Process
In TFP, therapy becomes a collaborative process where we carefully explore recurring themes and underlying conflicts that may be limiting your ability to feel fulfilled or connected. Together, we create a space to examine the internal experiences that arise, helping you develop greater self-awareness, emotional resilience, and healthier ways of relating to others. TFP is not about offering quick fixes or advice—it’s about fostering genuine change by addressing underlying patterns. TFP treatment typically involves twice weekly appointments for a period of 1 to 3 years.
Extensive clinical research has demonstrated that TFP is highly effective for individuals with complex emotional, personality and relational challenges. Studies have found that TFP can:
- Decrease symptoms of personality disorders
- Improve emotional regulation and reduce intense emotional reactions.
- Enhance interpersonal relationships by addressing patterns of conflict or detachment.
- Help individuals develop a more cohesive and stable sense of identity.
- Foster greater self-awareness and insight
- Lead to long-term improvements in overall quality of life and mental health.
TFP treatment is available Australia wide via Telehealth (Zoom), or at the Coffs Harbour clinic.
